By faith Moses left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw Him who is invisible.
Hebrews 11:27
This verse describes an example of faith – the life of Moses during his years when pursued by Pharaoh. In faith, Moses was sustained. Why? He saw with eyes of faith that which He knew was true, even when what he saw around him seemed to display the opposite.
You and I need to learn to see with eyes of faith (trusting more in what God has said than what we actually see). When this becomes a reality, we will make life responses based on God’s truths and not our circumstances. Look above (at the reality of Jesus) and look ahead(to the promises that are being fulfilled) more than look around.
Hebrews 12:2 instructs, “fix our eyes on Jesus.” This phrase can literally express, “look away to,” which describes someone who deliberately ignores the present circumstance and focuses on a point past them. In the case of faith, we look past our circumstances to the person of Jesus Christ.
Sarah Joy and her dad at that sandbar off “Ocean View” Beach
(A story from July of 2020.) My youngest daughter and I recently swam out to a sand bar that was just off one of our favorite beaches here in our city. She is a beginning swimmer but does well. And as we made our way out, I pulled her on a small surfboard while she glided along with not a care in the world. She was relaxed. But then she decided she would swim like her dad, so she rolled off the board and into the deep water exercising all that she had learned about swimming. Theoretically, she was just as safe swimming as she was on the board because she was exercising what she had learned. But her focus went through a transformation. Instead of looking around and taking in the scenery she was focused on me. She was swimming straight toward me. She was more confident in me getting to the sand bar than herself, so she stayed focused ahead on the safest point she knew – her father. She looked past the deep waters and the waves and made it safely. This is the meaning of “look unto Jesus.” This represents the true meaning of spiritual sight.
Where are you looking at the moment? Isn’t it time we resolve that the only place to look is to Jesus? There is no other way to make it safely than to keep your eyes on the safest point ahead. How real is this? Just ask a little girl named Sarah Joy.
Blessings!
