October 14, A New Song

I will sing. Psalm 144:9

From the Psalms to the book of Revelations, the call to present a new song to God becomes a fundamental expression of a heart that truly worships Him.  In Psalm 144:9, the Psalmist passionately expressed His desire to give unto the Lord a new song:

“I will sing a new song to you, my God;
            on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you.”

A new song does not necessarily depict of freshly composed song, nor a recently discovered song.  The Psalmist actually indicates a song that arises from the spirit of one who has become enveloped with the joy of bringing praise to our God.  The “new song” indicates a song that comes anew from the heart of the worshipper, even if the song itself is well rehearsed, fondly familiar, or from antiquity.  “New” represents how the song becomes expressed, and not what type of song is being expressed.  Here are three facts that will remind the worshipper how to always bring a new song to our Lord:

  1. Sing from the overflow of your private life with God.  And, if there is no private life of faith wherein you come regularly before God in devotion and consecration, then perhaps you should not pretend to sing unto the Lord until there is such a reality.
  2. Sing with excellence of heart more than excellence of talent.  This indicates a heart that is pure before God. We should not bring to God a sacrifice of praise if we have a heart of unconfessed sin, grudges against another, or thoughts that contradict God’s washing us white as snow through Christ our Lord.  Please understand, God given talent becomes such a blessing when that talent is used to bring people before God in worship.  But such talent is of no use in worship when the heart is not genuinely fixed on God.
  3. Sing as rendering to God a personal message from your heart to His.  Sing unto Him in devotion and not unto others in performance or participation.  For, worship is always a personal expression of the heart that truly seeks God.

I have discovered that when I can follow these three facts of worship, every song coming from my lips feels like a new song, whether the composition of music is an old hymn or brand-new music.  So today, measure your private and corporate praise and worship by the standard of a “new song.” Are you giving Him a new song?  Or, are you just singing music you like?  There is a vast difference indeed.

Today. Come before Him with a new song.  And let your heart rejoice in our God and King.

Blessings.
